Top 25 of 2016: #13 Elena Vesnina

Elena is a relative veteran in her sport of Tennis at the age of 30, however she is at her very peak, with a highest ever World ranking. She took Gold at the Olympics in the Womens Doubles tennis with her partner Makarova.  As well as that she had her best solo year, reaching a Grand Slam Semi Final for the first ever time at Wimbeldon. In doubles tennis she was runner up at the French Open in Womens Double and a winner at the Australian Open in Mixed Doubles, before finally winning the WTA Tour Championship finals in Singapore.

Top 25 of 2016: #14 Dorothea Wierer

The 26 year old Italian only featured on the pages of HWiS in June of 2016, and despite being a Winter Athlete, still managed to get enough clicks and attention to finish high up the list. She finished second at the World Championships in Oslo in the Pursuit event, which despite being fairly moderate success compared to the host of Olympic champions, coupled with her huge popularity has her in the top 15.

Top 25 of 2016: #15 Amanda Kurtovic

Amanda is  Norwegian Handball player. The Norwegians took Bronze in Rio, but despite the lack of a higher ranked medal Amanda still ranks in the top 15 from having had a huge level popularity since being featured during the Olympics. Amanda already has a Gold medal from 2012, so the Bronze is a little disappointing for her, losing out to the French and Russians. Norway are the current World Champions. Amanda only first featured in 2016 so has never appeared on the Top 25 of the year.

Top 25 of 2016: #16 Lisa Carrington

Lisa is a New Zealand flatwater Canoeist who won Gold at the 2016 Olympics. She is making her second top 25 of the year performance after making 25th in 2014. She retained her Olympics Gold at K1 200m this year in Rio, which is a discipline she has dominated for a number of years, As well as the Gold she won, she also took Bronze at the longer distance 500m distance.
